Flight Anxiety

How to Ease Fear of Flying While Vacationing

Vacation should be a time to relax—but if flying makes your heart race, it can overshadow the excitement. Here are a few simple ways to make air travel less stressful:

  1. Prepare Ahead:

Learn the basics of how flying works to ease your mind. Understanding turbulence, how planes are maintained, and the statistics behind air safety (spoiler: it’s extremely safe!) can help reduce irrational fears.

Practice deep breathing and visualize a calm flight in the weeks leading up to your trip.

  1. Use Calming Tools:

Bring noise-canceling headphones, a cozy scarf, or a favorite podcast. Distractions like movies or puzzles help keep anxiety at bay.  Apps like Calm, Headspace, or “SkyGuru” (which explains what’s happening during the flight in real-time) can be incredibly reassuring.

  1. Communicate:

Let a travel companion or flight attendant know you’re nervous. A little support goes a long way. Lean on those who are willing to give you that support.

  1. Stick to a Grounding Routine:

Arrive early, be prepared with where to go and how you will get there, avoid caffeine, stay hydrated, and get good sleep the night before. A calm start sets the tone for the flight.

  1. Get Support if Needed:

If fear of flying is holding you back, therapy (especially CBT or EMDR) can help you feel more in control.

Some airlines and airports even offer “Fear of Flying” programs that combine education and exposure therapy.

Flying might never be your favorite part—but it doesn’t have to ruin your vacation. With the right strategies, you can get through it and enjoy the trip you’ve been looking forward to.
