Choose who Gets a Seat at Your Table

“Accept people as they are, but place them where they belong.  You are the CEO of your life.  Hire, fire and promote accordingly.”

In the spirit of the new year, we can create many goals and either seem small and attainable or lofty and more of a challenge.  Sometimes our goals can hinge on external factors and these are known as extrinsic goals.  They can be driven by outside rewards, external validation or societal approval.  These can be challenging because you tie the success to an external factor which often you “Accept people as they are, but place them where they belong. You are the CEO of your life. Hire, fire, and promote accordingly.”

In the spirit of the new year, we often set goals that range from small and attainable to lofty and ambitious. Some of these goals depend heavily on external factors—things like rewards, validation, or societal approval. These are known as extrinsic goals, and they can be challenging because their success often hinges on circumstances outside of our control.

But what if we also focused on internal goals? What if our goals centered on what we want and what truly makes us happy? Does that make us selfish? Maybe. But does it also make us the CEO of our own lives—making decisions that support our happiness, sanity, and well-being? Absolutely.

This quote captures the idea that two things can be true at the same time. We can accept people for who they are and honor their journey. And we can also choose where they belong in our lives. We can set respectful boundaries when needed. We can “fire” people who no longer serve a healthy purpose. And we can “hire” and “promote” those who uplift us, support us, and help us become better versions of ourselves.

Standing up for yourself does not make you a bad person. Choosing to leave situations where you are not valued is not a failure—it is an act of self-respect. When you do so, you create space for people who treat you well and contribute positively to your life.  A new year creates new opportunities to enact change!  Be your best version and know we are always here to support you.
