Feeling stuck can be one of the most frustrating emotional experiences. You might know you want something to change be it your mood, your circumstances, your relationships, your patterns but every direction feels too big, too heavy, or too uncertain. At our practice, we hear this often, and we want you to know this: feeling stuck doesn’t mean you’re failing. It simply means you’re overwhelmed, and your mind and body are asking for a gentler approach.
When we zoom out and look at the “big picture,” it can feel impossible to know where to begin. The final goal of feeling better, healing old wounds, changing habits, rebuilding trust, gaining confidence can feel like it is miles away. And when the destination feels too far, we freeze.
This is where small steps matter.
In therapy, we often shift the focus from everything to the next thing. Not the next twenty steps, just the next one. Instead of trying to overhaul your entire life, we work together to set smaller, doable goals that your nervous system can actually handle. Maybe it’s taking five minutes to breathe before responding to stress. Maybe it’s making one difficult phone call. Maybe it’s practicing a new coping skill once today, not perfectly, just once.
These smaller goals are not “less than.” They are the building blocks of momentum. With each tiny step forward, you teach your brain and body, “I can do this.” And over time, those steps add up to real change.
So if you’re feeling stuck, start small and probably smaller than you think you need to. Pick one step that feels manageable. Then take it. You don’t have to see the whole staircase right now; you only need enough clarity to lift your foot to the next step.
And if you need support finding that first step, we’re here to help you move forward gently, steadily, and at your own pace.
