Showing Up with Love: Supporting Our LGBTQ+ Loved Ones in Uncertain Times

As therapists, we’ve had countless conversations lately with clients—both those who identify as LGBTQ+ and those who love them—who are feeling the weight of today’s political and cultural climate. There’s fear, exhaustion, and sometimes even a quiet sense of despair. And if you’re someone who cares deeply for an LGBTQ+ friend or family member, you might be wondering how to best support them right now.

Here’s what we want you to know: You don’t need to have all the answers. What matters most is showing up—with love, consistency, and a willingness to listen.

Be a calm, caring presence.
You don’t have to fix their feelings or offer perfect words. Just being available, checking in, and letting your loved one know, “We’re here if you ever want to talk,” can be deeply comforting. We all need spaces where we can exhale.

Affirm their experience.
So often, people just want to know that what they’re feeling makes sense. If your loved one expresses fear, anger, or sadness, meet that with compassion. Try, “That sounds really hard,” or “We can understand why you’d feel that way.” That kind of validation builds trust and connection.

Keep learning—and let them lead.
You don’t have to know everything about LGBTQ+ issues to be a good ally. What helps most is staying open, curious, and respectful. Ask how they’d like to be supported. Let them set the pace. And don’t be afraid to say, “We’re learning, but we care deeply and want to get this right.”

Make your support visible.
Whether it’s standing up for them in conversations, advocating for inclusive spaces, or just reminding them they are loved exactly as they are, those gestures matter—especially in a world that can feel unkind.

Care for your own heart, too.
Supporting someone through tough times takes emotional energy. Give yourself permission to rest, reflect, and get support when you need it. That’s not selfish—it’s a way to make your care more sustainable.

These times may be uncertain, but the power of love, acceptance, and human connection is unwavering. Your presence, your kindness, and your willingness to keep showing up—those things matter more than you know.

We see you. We’re with you. And we believe in creating a world where everyone belongs.
