This topic came to mind today after a morning of high stress. Despite all my best plans to get things accomplished, I kept getting interrupted, not just for a moment, but completely sidetracked for 15 to 30 minutes at a time. By mid-morning, I could feel the frustration building in my whole body. Before stepping into the office and sitting with my clients, I knew I needed to regulate myself first.
The good news is that calm doesn’t require hours of quiet or a full day off. It can be found in micro-moments throughout our day.
Micro-moments of calm are those small pauses when we intentionally slow down, breathe, and allow ourselves to be present. It might be taking three deep breaths before responding to an email, feeling the warmth of your coffee cup in your hands, or noticing the sound of rain outside your window. These moments don’t erase stress, but they help regulate your nervous system, lower tension in your body, and remind you that peace is still available, even in chaos.
As a therapist, I often encourage clients to start small. Choose one or two cues in your day like red lights, meal breaks, or transitions between tasks as reminders to pause and reconnect with yourself. You may be surprised by how much these tiny acts of mindfulness accumulate over time, creating a steadier, more grounded version of you.
Calm isn’t about escaping life, it’s about learning to find stillness within it and regulate ourselves despite the chaos.
