Burnout: When Life Starts Feeling Like Too Much

At our practice, a common theme we hear lately is people feeling such incredible pressure to do “all the things” and feeling exhausted. We are trying to balance work responsibilities, family needs, friendships, self-care, exercise, mental health, and somehow maintain a clean house and a sense of calm along the way. Add in the constant messaging about optimizing everything; sleep better, hydrate more, meditate daily, and apparently consume an impressive amount of protein so that even taking care of yourself, can start to feel like another job on the to-do list.

Burnout rarely shows up all at once, it often builds slowly. What starts as feeling stretched thin can turn into brain fog, disorganization, forgetfulness, and the sinking feeling that you’re falling behind no matter how hard you try. Tasks that once felt manageable  can suddenly feel impossible, decision making can become exhausting and even small responsibilities can feel paralyzing.

When you’re nearing burnout, productivity hacks and perfectionism are where many of us turn when in fact, they often make things worse. Instead, this is a time to narrow your focus. Rather than trying to fix everything at once, shift toward just today. What truly needs your attention right now and what is reasonable to accomplish today.

Setting small, attainable goals helps your nervous system settle and rebuild a sense of momentum. Maybe today’s success is answering a few emails, taking a short walk, or getting to bed a little earlier. Progress during burnout often looks quieter and slower than we expect, but it still counts.Burnout is not a sign that you’re failing, it’s a signal that you’ve been carrying too much for too long without enough space to recover. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is pause, simplify, and give yourself permission to take life one manageable day at a time.
